Braithwaite-Knowles appointed Turks and Caicos Attorney General

Braithwaite-Knowles appointed Turks and Caicos Attorney GeneralDeputy Attorney General, Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles has been appointed Attorney General of the Turks and Caicos Islands, His Excellency the Governor, Peter Beckingham, announced Monday, Feb. 24.

Braithwaite-Knowles has been Acting Attorney General of the TCI since October 2013 when her predecessor Huw Shepheard resigned.

As the Attorney General, Hon. Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles is the legal advisor to the Government and the House of Assembly, according to Section 41 of the 2011 Constitution.

In a media release, H.E. Governor Beckingham said "Rhondalee Knowles' was the outstanding candidate in an open and keenly fought selection process, which included international candidates from the Caribbean and Europe."

"I have worked closely with Rhondalee since my arrival last October, and she has always impressed me with her professional judgement, energy, and willingness to make tough decisions," H.E. Gov. Beckingham added. "I look forward to continuing to work with her in what is one of the key positions in TCI life.

"That the TCI is now one of a few UK Overseas Territories to have an Attorney General from its own citizens, is an added bonus.

The Premier, Hon. Dr. Rufus Ewing, on receiving word from the Governor of the appointment, made the following comment, “Today is a significant day, and a historical one, for us as Turks and Caicos Islanders with Hon. Braithwaite-Knowles as the first local to be appointed to the position of Attorney General." Premier Ewing added that he hopes this is just the beginning and that "over time we can see more Turks and Caicos Islanders being appointed to critical roles both within the public and private sectors. I offer congratulations to Hon. Braithwaite-Knowles and look forward to working with her.”

The recruitment panel appointed by the Governor was constituted as follows: Mrs Anya Williams, TCI Deputy Governor; Hon. Samuel Bulgin, Attorney General of the Cayman Islands; Dr. Beatrice Fulford, Chairman Public Service Commission; Mr. Patrick Boyle, Governor’s Office; Mark Greenway, Director Human Resources, TCI Government.
